About the Program

The School of International Studies at Peking University (hereinafter referred to as SIS) is inviting application for a two-year Master Program in International Relations (MIR). Students will receive intensive and rigorous training in various fields ranging from general politics, foreign affairs, to social development of contemporary China. Students are encouraged to study Mandarin in this program, but all MIR courses and theses are conducted in English. Students will be granted a master’s degree in International Relations by Peking University once all requirements are fulfilled.

Qualifications

1. Eligibility. This program is designed only for international applicants and applicants from the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan areas of China. Foreign applicants should hold valid passports issued by their countries, while applicants from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan must be permanent residents.

2. Prior Degree. Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an institution of recognized standing. Applicant who has not yet graduated upon application, must get the degree before September 2017.

3. Language Proficiency. Applicants from non-English speaking background or who did not receive their bachelor’s degree from an English speaking university are required to provide valid English test certificates - IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 107(ibt).

Complete Peking University Application form for international students (Master and Ph.D. Programs) online. Applicants from overseas please visit http://www.studyatpku.com to complete the application form. Applicants holding identity cards from Macau, Hong Kong, or Taiwan do not need to take the National Entrance Examination, but must apply online via: http://admission.pku.edu.cn/bm/  by December 15, 2016.

2. Graduation certificate and degree diploma, must be original or certified copies either in Chinese or English (Students in the last year of their bachelor’s program should provide an official letter stating their expected graduation date)

5. English language proficiency certificate, IELTS 7.0, or TOEFL 107 (ibt)
6. If applicable: abstracts of publications and/or any original work in other forms in relevant fields

8. One photocopy of all the application documents

The application materials will not be returned.

Submission

Applicants should send the documents to International Programs Officer Ms. CHEN Fang by mail and email via the contact information below. A nonrefundable application fee of RMB 400 Yuan is charged online with application form. No application will be processed without the application fee.

The applicants from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan should send the application documents to the Graduate Student Affairs Office of the School of International Studies, Peking University by January 16^th 2017.Note: Please indicate MIR Program in the hard copy of application materials, as well as on the cover of application materials posted to designated office.

Timetable

Applications open: October 1, 2016

Applications close: March 31, 2017 (All the application documents must submit before this date)

Pre-admission decisions announced: mid- April, 2017

Interviews (When necessary): late April (Finalists will be interviewed via Skype, telephone or, in rare cases, in person)

Final admission results announced: the end of May, 2017 (via email)

The offers sent out: July, 2017 (by both regular mail and email)

Program starts: early September 2017 (the exact date will be announced in the Admission Confirmation letter)

Tuition Fee and Scholarship

1. The tuition fee is RMB 75,000 Yuan per year.
2. The MIR program will nominate two or three candidates for the merit-based China’s Government Scholarship (CGS). The CGS will provide the awardees with a monthly living stipend and assistance with accommodation arrangement. The MIR tuition fee will also be partly covered by the CGS (students are expected to make up for the difference by other means). The application for CGS will be processed through the International Student Office of Peking University.
3. The students can also apply to the Chinese Government Scholarship program by themselves. Information is provided by the Chinese Scholarship Council (http://www.csc.edu.cn) and the Chinese Embassy of the student’s country of origin.

Degree

Certified by the Degree Committee of Peking University, a Master’s Degree in International Relations will be granted upon completion of required credits and successful defense of a Master’s thesis.

必修课16学分：Compulsory Courses for 16 credits

Chinese courses are compulsory for 4 credits. Courses No.1-5 requires for 12 credits.
